THE ACTIVITY OF NIM

The activity of the NIM covers mainly the following two areas:

Meteorology:

This area is the means and the reason of being of the Institute and most of its structure is dedicated to the operation of this activity.

It comprises activities related to:

  • Observation, storage, exchange and processing of meteorological data and climatology.
  • Weather forecast and climat.
  • Climatology and applied meteorology.

Geophysics and astronomy

This area has been integrated within the activities of the NIM, mainly due to its usefulness to the country.

It comprises activities related to:

  • The measurement and monitoring of seismic activity; and studies applied to geophysics.
  • The observation of the crescent moon and the establishment of lunar calendars for religious purposes.
  • The establishment of lunar and solar eclipse dates and the development of ephemerides.
